The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz

“I want you to forget everything you have learned in your whole life. This is the beginning of a new understanding, a new dream.”

This little book is insightful and full of Toltec wisdom. In my understanding Toltec stems from Native American culture and really prescribes techniques used to prevent the disintegration of the self and in doing so changing our perspectives and perception in life.

So right or wrong the four agreements that Don shares in this book are simply that, ways to change our perceptions to allow us to hold strength in one-self and in doing so harnessing more free and happy lives.

013: Book Reflections: Bird-by-Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

Bird-by-Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

This is a great book sharing insights into a life of a writer and this life of Anne Lamott. Who is she? Well it doesn’t really matter does it? Who am I? This also doesn’t matter and is not the reason I write. A writer writes to feel more, to release more, to better understand life and themselves and to really tell a story.

Starting out in our careers and our mission to success it all seems to be around chasing money and material possessions, which is fine and not a bad place to start but what does it all mean?

I started here and many of the people I speak with and interview have also started out with this intention yet along the journey the meaning and purpose behind having material possessions becomes blurred and you discover a greater truth to life. To be happy, live with purpose, and to do what you enjoy. (more…)

We Learn Nothing: Essays by Tim Kreider

I was reflecting on some new years resolutions from 10 years ago. There were goals and resolutions that never happened, never eventuated. Some did.

Actually my mum decided one day to pull them out and show me how she had collected a few years of my resolutions and that each year the same things came up again and again. Embarrassing mother story, nah, mothers are good at caring.

I still have things on my list that I carry around with me today. When will I ever learn?

Book Reflections | The Happiness Project – by Gretchen Rubin

The Happiness Project – by Gretchen Rubin

Happiness is something that we all chase and often we get stuck in a grove chasing the wrong things that we believe will lead us to a greater level of happiness.

I keep striving forward, always running, yet looking back sometimes I wonder if perhaps I could have been happier in past moments. My mother keeps telling me not to miss out on all that I have by working too hard.

Perhaps I need to soak up more of the present. Enjoy more of what I have and make fun out of all the simpler things that are available to me everyday, available to me right now.

Procrastination- Why You Do It, What to Do About It NOW by Jane B Burka, PhD & Lenora M. Yuen, PhD

Do you put things off until tomorrow only to get there and then decide to put it off again? Are you one that avoids doing certain things even though you know perhaps you should be doing them?

The Power of No: Because One Little Word Can Bring Health, Abundance, and Happiness by James Altucher & Claudia Altucher

Because one little Word can Bring Health, Abundance and Happiness

James and Claudia have written this great and easy to read little book on how the power of using NO can have dramatic affect on your life and bring with it greater health, abundance and happiness.

It certainly has made me reflect on my own situation and how by using the word ‘No’ more in my life may give me great fulfilment and satisfaction.

I believe that the power in saying yes is just as important however as they elude in their book is that when you truly unleash the power to say ‘no’, your ‘yes’ will be much more powerful and meaningful and one that opens countless opportunities.
